Entering Chords

Enter one chord into each chord field (i.e., C, Am, F, G). The chords must be in the same format as listed on the Chord Nomenclature page. Enter the chords in your prefered tuning. The Chord Generator will transpose the Chord Sheet based on tuning selected on the Chord Sheet Library page.

If you are creating a chord sheet with multiple chords, i.e., repeated chords, use the rows to structure your chords, i.e., one row for every 4 or 8 measures, and display using "Chords - Top".

If you are creating a chord sheet with single chords, i.e., no repeated chords (a "chords used in this tune" list), use the first two or three rows sequentially (don't skip chord fields) and display using "2-Column Display".

For alternate chords, use an * after the chord name. Refer to the Chord Nomenclature for chord names.

For example (for GCEA tuning):
Dm7 = Dm7 - 2213 Dm7* = Dm7 - 5555

Chord Sheet Symbols

Musical symbols are provided to assist you in formatting your chord sheet.

2x - Repeat previous chord twice
3x - Repeat previous chord three times
4x - Repeat previous chord four times
Left Repeat - Enclose a passage that is to be played more than once.
Right Repeat - Enclose a passage that is to be played more than once. If there is no left repeat sign, the right repeat sign sends the performer back to the start of the piece or the nearest double bar.
1st ending - Denote that a repeated passage is to be played in different ways on different playings.
2nd ending - Denote that a repeated passage is to be played in different ways on different playings.

Entering Lyrics

If you want to add lyrics with chords above the lyric, it works best to create the lyrics and chords in a text editor (NotePad, TextEdit).

  1. Set the font in the text editor to Courier.
  2. Add the title as the first line.
  3. Create the lyrics and chords, using the spacebar to line the chord designations with the lyric.
  4. Cut and paste into the lyric field of the Chord Sheet Generator.

Private Chord Sheet Library

If you want to make your chord sheet private, check the "Private" checkbox. This allows you to save a chord sheet that is in process and not ready to be made public, or to create your own personal library of chord sheets. If the checkbox is left unchecked, anyone can view your chord sheet.
